Nancy Susan Reynolds Award Winners Featured in Statewide Television Broadcast
Winston-Salem, NC (March 24, 2008) - The recipients of the 2007 Nancy Susan Reynolds Awards will be featured on local television broadcasts across the state, Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 6, at 2:00 p.m. (Note to editors: a listing with the broadcast station in your area is attached). The awards, which often are referred to as North Carolina's "Nobel Prizes," recognize unsung heroes who are making extraordinary contributions in their communities. Each recipient receives a $25,000 award - $5,000 for personal use and $20,000 which can be designated to charities of the winner's choice.
The awards and the broadcast are sponsored by the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, which presents the awards each November. The recipients of the 2007 Nancy Susan Reynolds Awards are Dave Genova of Asheville, who founded the Unity Project to help young adults dismantle racism and prejudice, for race relations; Susan Hill of Raleigh, who has spent more than 30 years working for women's health rights, for advocacy; and Lillie Sanders of Magnolia, who has devoted her life to helping those in need in her rural community, for personal service.
The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, headquartered in Winston-Salem, was established in 1936 as a memorial to the youngest child of R.J. Reynolds and Katharine Smith Reynolds. During its history, it has made grants of more than $414 million to projects in all 100 counties in North Carolina. Although it makes grants to a wide range of projects, it now gives special attention to five focus areas - community economic development, the environment, democracy and civic engagement, pre-collegiate education, and social justice and equity. The deadlines for grant applications are February 1 for consideration in May and August 1 for consideration in November. More information is available at the Foundation's web site, www.zsr.org.
