Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation offers one new fellowship each year to an individual who demonstrates an interest in philanthropy, public policy, the nonprofit sector and/or community service. The fellowship begins July 1 and lasts for two years. This position is salaried and includes benefits such as life insurance, medical and dental insurance, paid vacation, professional development funds, and reimbursement of expenses incurred through Foundation business.
Eligible candidates must be either graduates of an accredited North Carolina college or university or a North Carolina resident. Further qualifications include strong communication skills, both written and verbal; the ability to multi-task; the desire to contribute to an ever-changing work environment; a sense of responsibility and personal initiative; confidence and poise; willingness to work as a team player; and respect for diverse communities and leadership. Preference is given to recent college/university graduates.
The fellow acts as a junior program officer, acquiring increasing responsibility over the course of two years in evaluating grant proposals, visiting with grant applicants, assisting with grantmaking administration, working on projects of importance to the Foundation, and providing additional support to Foundation staff as needed. Through the grant process and related programs, the fellow gains experience with nonprofit organizations, public policy, Foundation trustees and other leaders across North Carolina. Each fellow has the opportunity to assist in furthering projects related to the five focus areas of the Foundation: Community Economic Development, Strengthening Democracy, Environment, Public Education, and Social Justice & Equity. The fellowship is also structured to enable the fellow to further explore areas that are of interest to his or her professional development and that align with the Foundation’s goals, mission and vision.
