2007 Annual Report Summary
The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation’s 2007 Annual Report is titled, Issues of Growth in North Carolina. The Report takes a comprehensive look at the effects that growth is having on North Carolina and how we are dealing with it. The lead article, North Carolina: She Ain’t What She Used to Be, was written by Ferrel Guillory and Andrew Holton. Guillory is the founding director of the UNC Program on Public Life, a faculty member in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and senior fellow at MDC, Inc. Holton is assistant director for research of the Program on Public Life. Jane Preyer, North Carolina Regional Director with the Environmental Defense Fund, contributed an essay titled, A Growth “Tsunami” Profoundly Impacts North Carolina’s Environment. Joy Franklin, Editorial Page Editor at the Asheville Citizen-Times, wrote Building and Rebuilding the State’s Infrastructure. Among the four of them, they left few stones unturned and collectively have created a valuable resource for persons interested in the total range of growth-related issues in North Carolina.
In addition, 22 diverse North Carolinians offered brief insights into the growth phenomenon from their particular viewpoints. And there are profiles of 10 nonprofits that are engaged daily in dealing with growth issues. Each of the organizations has received funding from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.
The Report also contains letters from Dr. Lloyd P. (Jock) Tate, Jr., President of the Foundation, and Leslie Winner, who became Executive Director of the Foundation in January 2007. There is a comprehensive list of grants made during the Foundation’s 2007 grant cycle and detailed information about application and grantmaking procedures. A financial report is included, as well as descriptions of three Foundation initiatives: The Nancy Susan Reynolds Awards, its sabbatical program for nonprofit executives, and the Hugh Humphrey Award.
