Deserving recipients of the Personal Service award are known in their communities as individuals who unselfishly help others.  This award recognizes inspired service and continued devotion to service under difficult circumstances, including personal and/or professional sacrifice.  Award recipients in this category willingly assist persons who have few alternatives and minimal ability to repay for the services rendered.

This category seeks to recognize those who have:

• Helped alleviate the condition of a marginalized group in the community
• Performed work which serves as a catalyst for self-respect and self-sufficiency amongst community members
• Provided special examples of service which cause others to take their responsibilities to their fellow North Carolinians more seriously
