Hispanics in Philanthropy
THE FUNDERS’ COLLABORATIVE FOR STRONG LATINO COMMUNITIES
A Project of Hispanics in Philanthropy
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The Funders’ Collaborative for Strong Latino Communities is a coordinated funding effort to provide capacity building grants and culturally-specific training to Latino nonprofit organizations. The Collaborative has four principal objectives: to strengthen the organizational capacity of small-to medium-sized Latino nonprofits; to increase philanthropy’s understanding of Latino nonprofits, the communities they serve, and the role they play in civil society; to foster leadership among Latino nonprofits that incorporates a vision of inclusiveness and collaboration; and to increase the net amount of philanthropic dollars flowing to Latino nonprofits.
Programmatically, the Collaborative offers grants to local Latino organizations, ongoing local and regional convenings and trainings, and a program-level Leadership Training Institute and ongoing external evaluation.
WHAT ORGANIZATIONS ARE ELIGIBLE?
The Collaborative targets “small- to medium-sized Latino nonprofits.” This is defined as a 501(c)(3) organization with a majority Latino Leadership that serves a majority Latino constituency within an annual operating budget of under $2 million. The focus is on cultivating the next generation of Latino leadership and developing the infrastructure of the Latino nonprofit sector.

WHAT TYPES OF PROJECTS WILL BE FUNDED? The Collaborative’s funds are specifically for capacity-building efforts. The proposals that will be funded are those that demonstrate how a grant from the Collaborative will increase the organization’s effectiveness and ability to serve its community. Specific sites of the Collaborative, including North Carolina, may choose particular areas of capacity building to focus on. Some examples of Collaborative grants in other regions include: board and staff development, strategic planning, financial management, fund diversification, developing advocacy capacity, developing research capacity, building technology infrastructure and facilities planning.
HISPANICS IN PHILANTHROPY The project is administered by Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP), an association of more than 450 U.S. and Latin American Grantmakers and nonprofit leaders committed to increasing philanthropic support of Latino communities and to promoting greater participation by Hispanics within organized philanthropy. HIP brings to the Collaborative a strong network of individuals with experience in collaboratives and within Latino communities.
