The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation makes grants to 501(c)3, tax-exempt organizations whose programs specifically benefit the lives of North Carolinians. All grant funds must be expended for the benefit of North Carolinians. The Foundation, with rare exception, does not make grants to the following:

Single-site private business ventures
Single-site public schools
Volunteer fire departments or emergency

After-school
Animal species preservation or rehabilitation
Arts
Crisis intervention
Greenways
Health care (physical and mental health)
Historic preservation
Homeless shelters
Plant species preservation
Scholarships
Senior citizen services
Social/human direct services
Substance abuse treatment
Transitional housing
Treatment or rehabilitation

Academic research
Athletic events
Building projects or renovations, including construction materials and labor costs
Capital campaigns
Computer hardware or software purchase (where it is the principal purpose of the grant)
