Nora Carr joined the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation as Assistant Director in August 2021. In this role, Nora promotes the mission and core values of the Foundation by overseeing All For NC: ZSR’s Framework for Grantmaking and Learning. This includes helping Trustees and staff identify programmatic priorities, playing leadership roles within the state of North Carolina and within the broader field of philanthropy, actively listening to and learning from people and communities across the state, and coordinating the programmatic and grantmaking operations of the Foundation. In addition, Nora supports Foundation operations, strategic planning and general management.
With a broad range of public, private and nonprofit sector leadership experience, Nora joined the Foundation after serving as chief of staff for Guilford County Schools, where she oversaw strategic planning, communications, volunteers and partnerships, media relations, crisis management, legislative affairs and policy development. A nationally recognized public relations expert, Nora served as chief communications officer for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, senior vice president of public relations for one of North Carolina’s premier advertising firms and as director of marketing and fund development for a non-profit consortium of more than 50 urban, suburban and rural public-school districts in the greater St. Louis metropolitan area. Throughout her career, she has served as a Board member and officer for a variety of nonprofit organizations in Greensboro, Charlotte and St. Louis, Missouri.
Nora earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Saint Louis University, a master’s in communication studies from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and an education specialist degree in school administration and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
